Chicago book citation generator

Prepare a Chicago bibliography entry for the edition you used.

ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 both work. Spaces and hyphens are optional; ISBN-10 may end in X.

Try an example

The structure of scientific revolutions — ISBN 9780226458113

Thomas S. Kuhn. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Fourth edition. The University of Chicago Press, n.d.

Check the year and edition against your copy. Missing dates appear as “n.d.” in APA.

Create a bibliography entry

Enter your book's ISBN to generate a Chicago notes-bibliography entry. Copy the result or download it as a UTF-8 text file. The lookup is free and does not require an account.

A bibliography entry and a footnote serve different purposes

This tool returns the bibliography form. A footnote uses a different arrangement and may need the page you cited. Shortened subsequent notes also depend on what you cited earlier. Do not paste a bibliography entry into a footnote without checking the required form.

Check the edition

Review the author, title, edition, publisher, and date against the book you used. Translations and edited volumes can require contributor information that a catalogue record does not supply.

See the side-by-side book citation guide for the differences between styles, and the translated-book guide for edition-specific decisions.

If the ISBN has no result, inspect the title and copyright pages. Catalogue coverage is uneven, so an unavailable citation is an unresolved lookup.
